One Room Challenge Week #1 Spring 2024 – The Beginning

Home Styling, Interior Design | 4 comments

So, I did a thing. I signed up for the One Room Challenge which is a design challenge where you pick one room in your house and you have eight weeks to make over the entire room. It can be a light makeover or a full on renovation; it’s up to you but it should be finished in eight weeks. Here is the link to the website; One Room Challenge. You will be able to follow along every week with everybody who is participating in the challenge.

I moved into my house in 2017, renovated and I still haven’t addressed my primary bedroom yet. I think that’s the way most people design their home. They put their own private space on the back burner. Well, I figured it was time and what better way to give me a kick in the butt than to have accountability by joining this challenge.

When I initially saw my bedroom, I wanted to paint it all black, but I chickened out and just painted 2 walls black. The idea behind it was to make my bedroom feel like a cocoon. I didn’t exactly achieve that, but to be fair, I didn’t really try. I moved on to other areas of the house with the bedroom design in the back of my mind.

Before Pictures

Here is my bedroom from the doorway. As you can see, the wall is black and there’s two nightstands and two brass hanging pendants that I got from Kudzu, which is a vintage store in Decatur, Georgia. A bench in front of the bed that I feel is too small for the bed and some artwork on both sides. The rug is beige and boring and I need some drapes on the windows because the sun comes in strong in the morning.

To the left of the bed is a set of French doors leading out to the deck. I have drapes with blackout lining, but again, boring with the white walls. The green chair with an ottoman that I bought at a vintage store years ago is one of my favorite pieces ever. I’m always toying with reupholstering it and I might, but as you’ll see when you look at my moodboard, it will fit right in with the green velvet.

This is the sitting area with a vintage loveseat I bought from the Habitat Restore when I was renovating the house. It’s kinda funky with the wood detailing and I think I could make it into something fabulous if I pick just the right fabric. This area also has the barn door leading into the primary bathroom and closet. I saved the door from the dumpster when we were renovating and I have a special project planned for it.

And now, the area that I had so many dreams about, the fireplace wall. It’s a niche in the sitting area and I want to build a surround for an electric fireplace insert and use the shelf with the books as a mantle. Then I would be able to put a tv on top and the whole area will be a moment. The shelf is actually the headboard for my waterbed that I’ve kept since high school. I knew there was a reason I kept it.

Inspiration Pictures

My favorite color is green and I really love mixing different shades of green like in the two views of the same room below.

I have an olive green chair that I love and I’ve always considered recovering it, but I love the green so much. I will have to see how it goes.

Even though there’s not a lot of green in this room, I love the touches of yellow ochre as an accent with the other colors.

A cocoon of green, including the ceiling is what I’m going for.

After seeing my bedroom from a fresh perspective with pictures and gathering some inspiration photos, I have come up with my moodboard. I’m so excited!

Stay tuned for next week where I will be showing you a floor plan and my first project. I will be posting every week and I will take you on this journey with me. So wish me luck and please follow along to give me encouragement. Click on

Thank you so much for commenting. I’m a newbie on my blogging journey so I didn’t see these comments right away. Will get better. I’m so glad you like my moodboard. I’ve always wanted a Dark & Moody bedroom and I’m finally getting my dream primary bedroom. Hope you continue to follow me.

Wow, what an exciting journey you’ve embarked on! Your vision for transforming your primary bedroom into a cozy cocoon of greens sounds absolutely captivating. I love how you’re incorporating your favorite color into the design to create a space that truly reflects your style and personality. Your attention to detail, from the vintage pieces to the potential reupholstery projects, shows a great eye for design.

As you move forward with your plans, I’m curious to know how you’ll balance the boldness of the black walls with the warmth of the greens and other accents. Have you considered any specific strategies or color palettes to achieve this balance? I can’t wait to see how your vision unfolds in the coming weeks. Best of luck with your project, and I’ll definitely be following along eagerly for updates!

Thank you so much for commenting. I’m still a newbie in terms of this commenting thing so sorry for the late reply. I wanted to feel like I’m in a forest, so the paint is actually a dark green with a blue undertone. Kind of like pine trees. I’m plant to lighten it up with gold and brass accents and different tones of light greens and teal. There will even be some creams included. But I love how it’s starting out. The painting has taken me so long, but I will prevail. Thanks again for commenting.
