One Room Challenge Week #3 Spring 2024 – It’s Getting Real

Home Styling, Interior Design

It’s Week 3 of the One Room Challenge Spring 2024 and I am fully immersed in the process and getting all my ducks in a row. The One Room Challenge is an eight week challenge where designers and decorators are invited to pick one room in their home and renovate or redecorate it in an eight week span. We post on the ORC website every week and you can follow along with your favorites. Obviously, I hope you follow me on my journey. 😂

All of the weeks will be linked at the end of this post as I finish them. To recap, I have a mood board, inspiration pictures and lots of before pictures which I showed you in Week 1. Starting off on Week 2, I thought I would be finished with the painting by the end of the week, but I was sadly mistaken. I went to my favorite fabric store and pulled a bunch of samples for my loveseat and my upholstered headboard that I’m DIY’ing. I also showed you my top two area rugs to go under the bed, but I’ve since found 10 or 100 more. As usual, every project takes longer than you think to finish, but onwards and upwards.

I’ve had this color palette in my mind for my primary bedroom ever since I moved into my house which was in 2017. Although I started off with black walls, I’ve pivoted to a dark green and I even painted the ceiling. I think that’s going to give me the warm and cozy feeling I want. Green is my favorite color, so I’m going to be surrounded by different shades of green and pops of chartreuse/ochre and even some teal. Of course creams and blacks will be sprinkled in to ground all of the colors and the metal will be brass since I already have brass hanging pendants which I absolutely love. It’s an unusual color palette, but I love it and I can’t wait for it to come together.

It’s getting really real. I’m still painting but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. To get the rich green color I wanted, I needed to paint three coats on the ceiling and the two light walls, and then two coats to cover the black which I hadn’t anticipated. I still have a couple of walls to paint and the baseboards and window trim needs finishing. You can see below the previous matte black color and now I have a satin finish on the green paint which I love so much better. The matte black was like a chalkboard and every smudge would show up. No bueno.

The next project is stripping what I’m going to use as my fireplace mantle. This is a close up picture of my old waterbed headboard that I’ve kept since I was in college. Finally I can do something with it. I need to get those pieces of wood off the bottom so it’s flat and I want it to be much lighter. Take it down to the natural color and then just poly over it. At least that’s the plan. I’ll have to see what it looks like when the stain comes off.

The plan for the fireplace is below. I want to have an electric fireplace, then the mantle, then my TV above that. I want to tile around the fireplace and I’ve narrowed it down to the tiles on the right. I’m leaning towards the bottom one. It will lighten up the room and I like how it’s distressed and almost looks like there’s rust spots. What do you think?

So this next week I will be finalizing the fireplace and tile, stripping the fireplace mantle and stripping my nightstands. My room is a jumbled mess right now, so I’ll show you a close up of the nightstands next week. If I have time, I’m going to take the fabric off of my loveseat to get ready for reupholstering. Wish me luck and let me know in the comments what you think so far..

See ya next time.
