The Best Home Bars: How to Create a Stylish Entertaining Bar in Any Home

Home Styling, Interior Design, Lifestyle | 0 comments

Let’s talk about one of my favorite design features: the home bar.

Now before anyone clutches their pearls and says, “I don’t even drink,” hear me out. A home bar isn’t just about cocktails. It’s about entertaining. It’s about creating a destination in your home. It’s about having a space that says, “Welcome. Sit down. Stay awhile.”

And frankly, it’s about looking fabulous.

Some people dream of walk-in closets. Some people want chef’s kitchens. Me? Give me a beautiful bar and I’m immediately planning a cocktail party.

Why Every Home Needs a Bar

A home bar is one of those things that instantly makes a house feel collected and intentional. It creates a focal point and gives guests a place to gather. Let’s be honest—people always end up congregating in the kitchen anyway. A bar simply gives them somewhere prettier to do it.

Even if you rarely entertain, a well-styled bar adds personality to a room. Think of it as functional decor. Beautiful glassware, vintage decanters, cocktail books, artwork, flowers, and collected treasures all come together to tell a story.

What You Need for a Well-Stocked Bar

Whether you’re a casual entertainer or the unofficial bartender of your friend group, there are a few essentials every bar should have.

The Spirits

A basic full bar typically includes:

  • Vodka
  • Gin
  • Tequila
  • Rum
  • Bourbon
  • Scotch
  • Whiskey

You don’t need top-shelf everything. Start with a few quality bottles and build over time.

Mixers

Keep these on hand:

  • Club soda
  • Tonic water
  • Ginger beer
  • Cola
  • Cranberry juice
  • Orange juice
  • Simple syrup

Garnishes

Because presentation matters:

  • Lemons
  • Limes
  • Oranges
  • Olives
  • Cocktail cherries
  • Fresh herbs like mint or rosemary

Glassware

A mix of:

  • Wine glasses
  • Champagne flutes
  • Rocks glasses
  • Highball glasses
  • Martini glasses

And if you’re anything like me, you’ll buy beautiful vintage glasses because they’re gorgeous and then tell everyone within earshot where you found them.

Bar Tools

The basics include:

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Jigger
  • Strainer
  • Muddler
  • Corkscrew
  • Ice bucket
  • Bottle opener

Nothing says “professional mixologist” quite like owning a muddler and having no idea where it is when you actually need it.

Anything Can Become a Bar

One of the reasons I love home bars is because there are absolutely no rules.

A bar cart? Perfect.

An antique cabinet? Gorgeous.

A bookshelf? Why not?

An old dresser? Even better.

I’ve seen people transform vintage secretary desks, armoires, consoles, buffets, and even old sewing cabinets into fabulous bars.

The beauty is that you can create one in virtually any space, regardless of your home’s size. A small corner, a dining room nook, or even an unused wall can become an entertaining station with a little creativity.

As someone who has spent years thrifting, antiquing, and rescuing furniture others overlooked, I can confidently say that some of the best bars aren’t bars at all—they’re simply pieces that found a fabulous second act.

My Favorite Home Bar

Speaking of fabulous second acts…

I own an antique Art Deco bar that completely stole my heart. It’s an heirloom piece of furniture handed down from my Mother who is a vintage and antique lover.

It’s crafted with gorgeous burled wood and has one of those magical pull-up tops that reveals a mirror inside. The first time I saw it as a little girl, I may or may not have heard angels singing. And at that time, I had no interest in cocktails. I just knew it was magic.

Art Deco design has always had a way of feeling glamorous without trying too hard. The rich wood grain, the geometric lines, the hidden compartments—it’s functional art.

Every time I open that mirrored top, I’m transported to another era. I imagine glamorous cocktail parties, jazz playing in the background, and women wearing fabulous dresses that probably weren’t comfortable but looked incredible.

Today, it serves as both a conversation piece and a reminder that beautiful furniture should be enjoyed, not hidden away.

Here she is in all her glory.

And here is the fabulous flip up top that showcases the mirrors inside. I styled the inside with different containers for toothpicks, hors d’oeuvre spears and stirrers. Inside the cabinets are compartments for bottles, extra glasses, napkins and anything else you need storage for. Fabulous, isn’t it?

I’ve included some of my favorite bars from across the internet below.

Bars With a Twist

Bars can literally be made out of anything. Get creative and have a vision. For example, the bar below was made out of three red wagons. Can you believe it? I’m aging myself, but I remember the radio flyer wagons too.

Take a plant stand and turn it into a bar. The different levels will add interest. This gold plant stand could go with any design style.

Yes, you can take an old tv, hollow it out and turn it into a bar.  Very retro and fun.

Vintage Industrial Bars

I love when people take an old industrial work table or cart and turn it into a bar. This yellow one is distressed but all you have to do is seal it with a coat of poly and you’re in business.

This old wooden work table still has paint stains on it, but in my opinion that’s the beauty of it.

Here’s another rusted green work table. I love this so much.

Put three vintage metal carts together to give you a lot of impact.

This would be so cool in a bachelor pad or man cave.

Hidden Bars

What’s better than a hidden surprise? Get creative on how you want to enclose your bar.

I love how this piece of art hides the bar behind it. So fun.

You can take any closed cabinet and turn it into a bar, but this one by Soho Home is so fabulous with the detailed doors and marble top.

A closet with a door is the perfect area to build a bar. Paint the inside a pop of color, including the inside of the door, and it’ll make you happy every time you open it.

This red bar is definitely what you need to make a statement. Love how the inside of the door has glass storage.

Up on the Wall

Wine storage is a big one for a lot of people and besides being incorporated into the bar cart, cabinet, fridge etc., how about putting it up on the wall? Think of putting pegs on the wall to hold the bottles. Don’t forget to get holders that have a cap on the end so they don’t roll off.

Staying in the theme of getting storage up on the walls, these gold wine glass holders are perfect.

Styling Your Home Bar

Styling makes all the difference with anything in design. Whether it’s fashion, interiors, exteriors or even hair wouldn’t you agree? Styling is my favorite thing to do because I get to really express myself with a mix of vintage and modern items. I even take things out of context and use them for something totally new. With my bar I styled the top with artwork, a collection of shot glasses on a tarnished silver oval tray, added some of my used corks to a glass vase and used an old Galliano bottle for greenery. A candle and some glassware fill out the top.

So once you’ve chosen your bar, have fun styling it.

Layer in:

  • Artwork
  • Lamps
  • Fresh flowers
  • Vintage barware
  • Cocktail books
  • Decorative trays
  • Candles
  • Collected treasures from your travels

Remember, a home bar should reflect your personality. If you’re a wine lover, showcase beautiful bottles. If you’re a coffee fanatic, create a coffee bar. If cocktails aren’t your thing at all, create a mocktail station complete with sparkling waters, syrups, and fancy glassware. The goal isn’t perfection. The goal is creating a space that invites people to gather.

Art

I love art surrounding the bar. Take a look at this modern arrangement with pops of color. From the red chair, the yellow gumball machine and the yellow flowers, everything supports the colors in the two art prints.

Try a chalkboard to have an interactive bar. You can have drawings, cocktail recipes, jokes, welcoming messages, etc. The sky’s the limit.

Image via Apartment Therapy

I’m a fan of digital art and Etsy has a plethora of digital art companies where you can download art relating to bars and drinks. Go to a local copy shop to print it out, frame it and you’ve got some one of a kind art for your bar.

Neon Signs

“Gin & Tonic” on a tropical wallpaper is a fun and free spirited take on a bar.

“Drink” is straight to the point and lets people know fun times are ahead.

Collections

Bottle stoppers can be found in vintage stores, online or in your local home goods store. Mix and match for an eclectic look.

When I was growing up, my Mom had a collection of matchboxes in an old fish bowl so this really spoke to me. Try wine corks, bottle caps, etc.

Putting it all Together

I love all of the different materials in this bar. The rattan wallpaper, the red flowers, the greenery, art, brass container, a bowl of fruit, a tray and a tortoise shell ice bucket. Mix and match to come up with something very personal.

Add a fun lamp, artwork, books, and a modern tray to contrast with old silver and you’ll end up with a visually interesting bar like below.

Last Call

At the end of the day, a home bar is more than just a place to store drinks; it’s a stylish feature that can enhance the ambiance of your living space. It’s where friends gather, conversations linger, and celebrations begin. And if that bar happens to be an antique Art Deco masterpiece with burled wood and a hidden mirror? Well, that’s just icing on the cocktail.

So whether you choose a chic bar cart, transform a piece of furniture, or create a dedicated bar nook, the possibilities are endless.
