Style is deeply personal and I’m a firm believer that if you love it, it’ll always be in style. That’s why I’m so glad that the design world is coming around to that feeling. It seems like every style is a mixture of different styles and there’s absolutely something for everybody and you can mix and match to come up with something completely unique. With that said, the trends that the forecasters are saying will be in are really nothing new. They are just updated and modernized a little. It was very interesting to dive into how these styles have either “come back” or morphed into something for the current times.

Here are some recent blog posts that you might want to read before you get into this:

Now, get a cup of coffee or tea and enjoy.

Vintage Maximalism

Maximalism has taken a turn for the better. I’m not a huge fan of maximalism but I think it’s because you have to be bold and fearless with matching different eras and patterns and maybe I’m just a bit chicken. I am a fan of vintage though. You can find me most weekends either going to vintage stores, antique markets or trying to find a garage sale. I even pick up things from the side of the road. So vintage is my jam. I especially like taking a vintage chair or sofa and reupholstering it in a funky fabric. So I found myself wondering why I was drawn to so many of this “new” style’s aesthetic and then it hit me. It was because of the lady below.

Kelly Wearstler

She is the Queen of Everything. Do you hear me? I love her so much. Her interior style and her personal fashion style are GOALS. She single handedly, to me, invented Vintage Maximalism, although it wasn’t called that back when she started in 1995. She definitely has a 70’s vibe, which speaks to me, but she is Maximalism mixed with Vintage which is what this style is all about. She strikes that perfect balance of not overly maxed out and vintage finds that she recovers in funkiness.

This living room has so many different colors and patterns that shouldn’t work together, but they do. That’s the magic of Kelly.

Why not make your office a maximalist’s dream? Anything goes with this style and the hand chairs are so much fun.

Maximalism is not limited to bright colors. You could totally be a maximalist using neutral colors. There’s a lot going on in this living room, but the colors make it look less busy.

More Vintage Maximalism

“More is more” is the mantra of the Maximalist and the Vintage part of it is scouring vintage and flea market sales for things that speak to you and mixing it in. It can also be an eclectic mix of eras that just somehow work together. I once read that Maximalism is “beautiful chaos” and surrounding yourself with things you love.

Leopard print is one of the mainstays of maximalism. Check out this cool living room. Design professionals always say leopard is a neutral and I totally concur.

Yellow mod sofas in velvet play well with the gray walls and large scale prints. The chrome and glass table is a vintage find that completes the package.

You don’t always have to have colored walls or wallpaper. The white walls in this living room allow all of the colors and patterns to pop.

Dark walls are cool too. It’s giving a kind of Victorian feeling. Love the ceiling medallion, the painted ceiling, trim and the furry chair.

Kitchens can be maximalist also. With different materials, dark beams, touches of gold, bold art and a red vintage stove, this is maximalism at its best.

Another take on kitchen maximalism has a Moroccan rug, a yellow refrigerator and a dark terrazzo floor. The pop of purple just makes this awesome.

How fun would it be to have this bathroom with the silver mosaic clawfoot tub in the middle. Feels very Old Hollywood, but also with a disco ball 70’s flair.

I’ve seen this office before and it’s so striking with its vintage pink chair and vintage toys. Patterns and texture galore, make this an office dream.

Gold framed pictures, check. Peacock chair, check. Zebra rug, check. Vintage credenza and mirror, check, check. All of these turn these two rooms into a maximalist’s haven.

Blue again on the walls, trims and door. Think about quirky, unique items like the bear table and Art Deco bar.

This dining area makes me smile. From the blue ceiling to the copper light to the vintage “little boy blue” picture and the patterns. Mix and match to your heart’s content.

Modern Organic

I find myself liking different styles for different rooms in my house. For living rooms and kitchens, I’m totally Modern Organic so this one is close to my heart. This style is also one that you can easily make tweaks to such as pulling in some mid-century modern and rustic and industrial touches. Using natural materials, organic shapes, an earthy palette, vintage furniture and touches of steel and brass, there are two ways to do this style. A darker side and a lighter side.

The Darker Side

The dark side is with medium toned woods, steel, cement and organic shapes/textures. It can sometimes have a 70’s vibe and I’m totally into that.

This kitchen has that Modern Organic feel with the steel upper cabinets and wood cabinets on the bottom. The earthiness of the stone really makes this kitchen sing. The bar stools and pendants give it that touch of industrial which I love.

This living room gives me chills. There’s such a mixture of natural materials from the wood, to cement, the stone ledge, touches of brass and vintage side chairs. I love everything about this room.

Look at the mix of materials in this chic bathroom! There’s copper, zellige tile, cement tiles, marble and textured walls. Dynamite.

The Lighter Side

The lighter side of Modern Organic uses the same natural materials and vintage touches, but in lighter tones and a more limited palette.

Even though this kitchen has some black cabinetry, I still consider it to be on the light side because the palette is limited and it’s counteracted by the light hood, walls and island.

Look at this extraordinary living room. The vintage rounded chairs pair so well with the clean lines of everything else.

Check out this dining room from The Lifestyled Co. The steel doors, the pendants, the beams, the rounded chairs and organic wooden table scream Modern Organic.

Dark and Moody

Dark and Moody is still in and I love it especially in small cozy rooms. Behr named Cracked Pepper its Color of the Year for 2024. I even have a black bedroom that I chickened out on and only went for two walls, but I digress. And even better, you don’t have to limit yourself to black. Think dark burgundy, olive green or any of your favorite dark colors.

The sophisticated palette of black and white gives this bar a lot of sexiness.

This dining room is simply fabulous. I love how the color is on all the walls including the ceiling and trims. The vintage chairs are spectacular and the green pendant is giving me the vapors. Stunning!

This living room also has a painted ceiling, which adds to the coziness. There’s enough light in this room to keep it from looking like a cave although I like a good cozy cave room sometimes.

This dark green is another way to do moody. I love the molding on the wall and brass touches.

Modern Farmhouse has Evolved

Modern Farmhouse is not out but it has evolved into Belgian Farmhouse, Modern Cottage and California Casual. These different styles take the farmhouse look but add a little more personalization depending on what you gravitate towards.

Belgian Farmhouse

For this style, think neutral palette & textures, linens & minimalism with pale unfinished wood. It’s more of a rustic look that makes you think of European cottages. The texture can come from stone, bricks (not red and/or aged belgian bluestone pavers.Light is also important in this style. Start with large windows to spread light into your home. Black iron is used sparingly. The highlight of this style is the mixtures of natural materials.

This kitchen has the beautiful pale stone backsplash that pairs with the pale oak cabinets and island. The black pendant adds just a touch of grounding for the space.

The entryway that leads to the living room highlights the linen curtains and paved floors.

Modern Cottage

This style has all the earmarks of an English Cottage but with some updated twists. It’s characterized by a romantic and cozy feel, but not as cluttered as the original version. The modern version is a lot more minimal. This is a timeless aesthetic and I think it will never truly go out of favor. To get this style, you should focus on antique furniture, natural elements like wicker, vintage mirrors, stripes and floral prints and dark woods. It’s definitely more color forward than the Belgian style but still mostly in muted, time-worn colors.

From the corbels, the display of dishes and the brick ceiling, this kitchen definitely gives you the cottagey feel but with all of the modern amenities.

An antique mirror in the entryway gives this vignette a cottage look along with the green velvet bench.

This spindly 4-poster bed definitely makes you feel like you’re in the English countryside. This bedroom evokes a feeling of coziness.

California Casual

The cool California Casual look has been trending for several years now and in 2024, it has really evolved into the style we know today. Think Amber Interiors and McGee & Co. It takes the best of modern, rustic farmhouse and coastal and melds it all together. This is the older, more sophisticated sibling of Modern Farmhouse. Pops of color give the neutral tones of woods and black accents a very modern feel. Start with creamy white walls, warm mid-tone wood, mixes of warm and cool color, rustic and coastal decor and modern furniture (not mid-century).

This living room is filled with Cali Casual touches such as the rustic pottery, the mix of blue and warm ochre tones, the coastal stools and the modern furniture.

This kitchen definitely gives the California Casual vibe. The rustic beams and coastal pendants hit it right on the nose.

This style has the most color accents such as this beautiful blue zellige tile in the bathroom. Coupled with the warm terracotta tile, makes this Cali Casual.
