If you are new to my blog and are just joining me, let me tell you about the One Room Challenge. It’s an eight week challenge where participants pick a room to renovate or makeover and post it on their Blog, Instagram and/or Tiktok. Then each Wednesday, we upload each week’s posts to the ORC website. There, you’ll be able to see all of our progress and get some helpful design and DIY tips. The links to my previous blog posts are at the bottom of this post.
This is Week #6 and I can’t believe it. We are getting down to the wire and to be honest, I’m kinda freaking out. This past week would not let me be great. Sigh. Every time I needed to work outside, it rained and I don’t have a garage or a tent. When I say rain, I’m underselling it. THERE WERE TORRENTIAL DOWNPOURS AND HIGH WINDS! Little green thingies from the trees are all over my deck, patio and everywhere else. Needless to say, the sanding and cutting wood did not get finished. So I did some upholstery work or should I say, I started tearing it apart.
I took off the dust cover on the bottom and let me tell you, there’s a reason why it’s called a “dust cover”. It was dusty as hell. I just ripped it off and threw it away. I’ll have to buy some new fabric.
Then I pried off the wood pieces with my heavy duty upholstery staple remover. This was a life changer for me after buying cheap ones. There’s going to be a million staples to remove and it works as a mini crowbar too. I found this out by default because I could not find my flat head screwdriver.
What the hell? Somebody from the 60’s is punking me, putting a candy wrapper inside the upholstery. LOL
If you’ve been following along with my progress, you know I used Citristrip to strip the paint and stain off my nightstands and it worked so well. So I said to myself, cool, I’ll use it for the fireplace mantle. In last week’s post, I brushed it on, put plastic wrap on it and left it for about a day and a half. After scraping it off and cleaning the residue, as you can see below the Citristrip didn’t really do too much of anything.

So I got out my Ryobi sander, put on a 60 grit pad and went to work. I took off those pieces on the bottom so it would lay flat. The mantle is upside down and they just screwed off.
Next, I pried the back pieces off so I could sand them.
Here’s the work in progress on one of the back pieces.
Please don’t ask. I had to leave the nightstands alone for now because they were making me cuss. At least I got one nightstand almost where I want it as you’ll see in the picture where I’m going to make a headboard template. I just wanted to show you my new Ryobi Detail Sander with Triangular Head, I love it. It allows me to get all in the corners and crevices.
40 hours later. LOL It really didn’t take that long but the nightstands are another thing like I said. I left the right back panel off because there’s a light switch on the wall so I’ll have to cut out a rectangle for it.
Tip of the Day: never take pictures when you’re sleep-deprived. LOL I folded the brown paper over, laid it over half of the windows and behind the nightstand and I’m going to draw a template for the headboard. Once I have it the way I like it, I will cut it out, unfold it and it will span the whole width. I have an idea in my head, but I’ll have to play around with it.
The fireplace tile finally came in and one box had a bunch of them cracked on the bottom. I’ll have to cut a row anyway, so I hope it works out. Cross your fingers. Other than that, I love the variation in the colors. So pretty.
After a couple of delays, the fireplace insert is here. I was so pooped out when I took this picture, so please don’t judge.
So, I hope you’re invested in this like I am. Fat chance, but I hope you’re at least enjoying the adventure. This coming week is going to be stressful, but what’s new. Please leave me some words of encouragement in the comments and check out the previous week below.
See ya next time.
