National Craft Month – Hurray for Crochet!

Craft Month Is Just Getting Started

March is National Craft Month, which means it’s time to talk about something near and dear to my creative little heart: making things with your hands. Real things. Beautiful things. Things that require patience, creativity, and maybe a cup of coffee sitting next to you while you figure out what on earth you just did three rows back.

Now before anyone starts having flashbacks to summer camp crafts—you know, the kind involving glue sticks, construction paper, and questionable glitter decisions—let’s be clear about something:

Crafting is Art. Full stop.

It’s design. It’s skill. It’s texture, color and composition. It’s the same creative energy that goes into interior design, painting, sculpture, and fashion. The only difference is that sometimes it involves yarn, power tools, or a staple gun. And honestly? I respect all three.

This month on the blog, I’m celebrating different kinds of crafting—from DIY art to reupholstering projects and other creative rabbit holes I love disappearing into. But we’re starting with one of my personal favorites: Crochet.

Gen Z has fully embraced crochet, and honestly, I get it. It checks a lot of boxes: creativity, sustainability, and the kind of mental break we all need from staring at screens 23 hours a day. Crochet is the opposite of fast fashion and digital overload. It’s slow. It’s tactile. It requires patience. And at the end of it, you actually have something real in your hands.

For a generation that values individuality, crochet is basically a dream. You can make your own tops, bags, hats—pieces that no one else has because you literally made them yourself. There’s also a strong community around it, especially on platforms like TikTok and Instagram, where creators share patterns, tutorials, and their latest projects.

It also fits perfectly into the whole slow-living, slightly whimsical aesthetic that’s been floating around the internet—think cozy textures, handmade everything, and a little bit of that cottage-in-the-woods energy. In other words, crochet lets you slow down, make something beautiful, and maybe give your brain a break from the chaos for a minute. Which, frankly, sounds pretty great.

So…What Exactly Is Crochet?

Crochet is a form of textile art where you use a single hooked needle (called a crochet hook) to pull loops of yarn through other loops, building fabric one stitch at a time.

Unlike knitting, which uses two needles and keeps multiple stitches “live,” crochet works one stitch at a time. That means it’s wonderfully forgiving. Drop a stitch? You’re usually not about to unravel your entire life.

The word crochet comes from the French word “croche,” meaning “hook.” Which is exactly what you’re using to create everything from blankets and sweaters to sculptures and art pieces. Yes, sculptures. Because crochet has officially moved far beyond your grandmother’s afghan. (Although shoutout to grandmothers everywhere because those blankets are still undefeated.)

A Little Crochet History Moment

Crochet as we know it began appearing in Europe in the early 1800s, though forms of hooked needlework existed long before that. It gained serious popularity during the Victorian era, when intricate lace crochet became fashionable.

During the Irish Potato Famine in the mid-1800s, crochet became a crucial source of income. Irish women created incredibly detailed lace pieces that were sold across Europe and America. What started as necessity turned into a recognized art form.

Fast forward to today and crochet is having a massive renaissance. Designers are creating everything from fashion-forward garments to large-scale fiber art installations. And honestly? I love seeing it.

Crocheters I’m Obsessed With

If you want to fall headfirst into the crochet world, these creators are fantastic places to start. Each of them brings something unique to the craft and I am currently totally obsessed.

TL Yarn Crafts

If crochet had professors, TL Yarn Crafts would absolutely be teaching master classes. Toni Lipsey, the creator behind TL Yarn Crafts, is known for gorgeous modern patterns, incredible tutorials, and making crochet feel accessible without dumbing it down.

Her designs often feature rich textures and thoughtful color work, and she has a talent for explaining techniques in a way that makes you feel like you actually can do that complicated-looking stitch.

She’s also a huge advocate for the crochet community and constantly pushes the craft forward in fresh, contemporary ways.

Crochet Accs

Crochet Accs specializes in wearable crochet clothing and accessories that feel stylish and modern. Kiara Armstrong designs hats, bags, and statement pieces that look like they walked out of a boutique rather than a craft store. The craftsmanship is polished, the designs are thoughtful, and the finished pieces prove that crochet absolutely belongs in the fashion world.

Because let’s be honest: a handmade item with great texture is basically the fiber version of good interior design.

Loosends Crochet

Loosends Crochet, founded by Bennett Tracz, is a great example of how crochet has officially entered its cool era. Not only because he’s a man, but his work pushes crochet beyond the classic blanket-and-scarf territory and into something that feels much more like modern fiber art. His statement bags often play with bold color, graphic shapes, and really interesting textures that make you stop scrolling and think, Wait…that’s crochet?

Another thing that makes Loosends Crochet stand out is its commitment to sustainability. In a world overflowing with fast fashion and disposable everything, Bennett’s work leans in the opposite direction—thoughtful, handmade pieces designed to last.

Designers like Bennett are helping shift the conversation around crochet. It’s not just a cozy hobby anymore—it’s design, fashion, and creative expression all wrapped up in yarn.

Amazingish Grace

Amazingish Grace is all about playful creativity and joyful experimentation. Her projects often bring a sense of personality and charm that reminds you crafting should actually be fun. Imagine pieces that feel whimsical but still beautifully constructed. And what I love the  most about her is that she shows you how crochet isn’t just for Fall and Winter.

She’s also the kind of maker who reminds you that sometimes the best projects come from trying something different just to see what happens.

Why I Love Crochet (a.k.a. My Favorite Kind of Meditation)

Crocheting always puts me in a meditative state. The rhythmic motion of hooking yarn and creating stitches helps in quieting my mind and there’s something deeply satisfying about watching yarn turn into something real. A blanket. A scarf. A bag. A weird little project that started as a Pinterest idea and somehow became a masterpiece.

So sometimes the best thing you can do for your mental health is sit down with a hook, some yarn, maybe a good Netflix show and absolutely no emails. Your hands are busy. Your mind settles. Your shoulders drop about two inches from your ears. In a world that moves a little too fast sometimes, I’ll take all the meditative hobbies I can get.

So far this year, I have been crocheting like a crazy person and it puts my mind in a happy place. I realized just how much I loved to make things with my hands and it takes me back to sitting next to my Grandmother and crocheting while watching her “stories”.

My Atlanta Falcons set. I just hope they live up to all my hopes and dreams this Season.

This made me so proud. First time making a sweater and it was really easy. Just big granny squares stitched together.

Another scarf with cute ball trim.

My first time making a Kerchief and it came out so cute.

Crochet Is Just The Opening Act

Over the rest of National Craft Month, I’ll be diving into other creative corners I love—things like:

  • DIY art projects
  • Reupholstering furniture (because sometimes a chair just needs a glow-up)
  • Textile and fabric projects
  • And other crafty adventures that blur the line between design and art

Because creativity doesn’t live in one lane. It shows up everywhere—from yarn to paint to a perfectly reimagined thrift store chair. And honestly? That’s where the fun is.

So if you need me this month, I’ll probably be somewhere with a crochet hook, a pile of yarn, and a cup of coffee, pretending I’m only going to start one small project. And we all know how that usually ends.

If you want to see some of the projects I finished last year, please check out this blog post – NCM – Last Year’s Projects.

See ya next time.
