It’s Time to Revisit the Black House

Home Styling, Interior Design

I love black houses and black walls so much. I even have a whole board devoted to black walls on my Pinterest. What I love is that it can go glam, farmhouse, traditional, industrial, mid-century modern, rustic; just about any style would work. Also, greenery looks stunning up against a black background, so your landscaping will really pop.

I actually chickened out when I renovated my house and went with a light and medium tone gray on the exterior. I did paint two walls in my primary bedroom black, but then I updated it with dark green walls when I did the One Room Challenge.

Anywho, back to the exterior of my house. I recently went to the Haven Conference

here in Atlanta and Tamara Day from Bargain Mansions, on the Magnolia Network, was talking about her black house. From what I remember, it was a mixture of black and brick similar to the house below. It gave me more motivation to rethink my house color.

I’ve compiled a list of my favorite images to give me some inspiration.

Black Focal Points

If you just want to dip your toes in the water, here are some ideas to create a focal point using black. Mixing materials and/or colors will help to break up the black and create some interest. You can mix stone, brick, wood or stucco.

This house has multiple surfaces like black shakers, brick and traditional brown shakers on the roof.

You can even just paint the door a fun color to brighten up the house.

Landscaping

Like I said previously, landscaping really pops against a black house. Just take a look at these stunning houses. I especially like the desert style plants like cactus and aloe.

Different Design Styles

A black exterior will go with any architectural style as evidenced by the houses below. There’s a city rowhouse, a mid-century house, a cottage, a Victorian and a farmhouse.

All Black Everything

Here are my favorite black colors from Sherwin Williams which can easily be color matched to any other paint brand.

It was so hard to narrow this down so as I said earlier, if you need more inspiration please check out my “Black Walls” board in Pinterest (@lesliekarendesign) and I hope you will be braver than I was. What do you think? Would you paint your house black? Let me know in the comments.

See ya next time.
