This is Part 2 of the Fall 2023 Trends. If you didn’t see Part 1, check it out here. I am breaking down all of the Design Trends in fashion and interiors for Fall. Some of them were surprising and some of them were just a continuation of what’s been happening all year and even last year. Like most trends, you can take them with a grain of salt or put your twist on them to make it your own. It’s good to see what the trendsetters are thinking about and if you’re like me, wondering how they can all land on the same trends at the same time. Makes you go hmmm.
Moody Artistic
This is my name for this trend. Other names are Dark Academia, Dark Maximalist, Modern Gothic or Dark and Moody. Whatever you call it, it’s my jam. Grounded with black but with brass, the usual pops of jewel tones or an even more modern pop of muted tones, this is very sophisticated but very wearable and dare I say, sexy. It’s also easy to incorporate into your decor. It’s not spooky or ooky (Addams family reference).
Erdem showed this beautiful midi dress with statement sleeves, emerald green and pops of pink. I love this length of dress, don’t you?
In another version of this trend, Burberry went full out maximalist with this feathered coat and black and an artistic dress underneath.
Altuzarra was doing robes and I’m totally into it. The color story with the plums is so unique and elegant.
Giorgio Armani showed this trend with the micro-trend of shawls and wraps. The flowers on the dress looked painted on and the shawl had a tie-dyed pattern. The pattern clash is so good.
The interior below has all of the standard goth elements, like Edgar Allen Poe birds, gilded mirrors and a dark fireplace, but is painted in a dark gray to take some of the edge off. It’s much more modern.
Emerald green, black, brass and a pop of rust/orange have all the standard touches of dark and moody but in a modern way. It’s a good mash-up of styles.
This bathroom is the definition of Moody Artistic. It’s dark, the wallpaper is very artistic, the touch of brass. I could go on and on about this bathroom. So sexy.
With the plum feature wall and the dark flowered wallpaper, this is a modern take on this trend with the light bedding and white walls making it not so dark.
You can make this fashion trend your own with this beautiful shawl. It has all of the jewel tones with a touch of black.
I can’t believe that I found these Cole Haan slides in this color palette. I’m a firm believer that you can wear sandals into Fall even if you have to wear socks. If you don’t believe me, check out my blog post on this very topic.
These Puma sneakers are the ultimate. Black with the pastel flowers; I need these in my life.
As far as I’m concerned, bomber jackets will never go out of style. This one has moody and artistic down to a tee.
For interiors, you can add this vase and some stems to a moody room and you’re all set.
Vintage botanical prints have been around for years, and these fit into this aesthetic very well.
Wallpaper is definitely trending all over and this one in particular is giving me all of the feels.
This crow light would fit in Edgar Allen Poe’s study wouldn’t it?
Beige
It’s back….. Yes, our decor nemesis from back in the day is officially back and I’m not mad. I think it’s in response to all of the Barbiecore that was going on and this is an opposite trend which usually happens. It’s almost like cleansing your palate. Most of the fashion designers showed all shades of beige in their collections. Interior Design was also on the beige wave including paint colors.
As people keep talking about “quiet luxury”, beige is the perfect color in my mind. If you don’t know, fashion influencers are discussing how they don’t want to show so many logos on their clothes and instead wear quietly luxurious clothes that don’t shout how much money was spent. I personally say do you boo. If you want to buy something that has logos on it, it’s your choice.
Hermes showed this monochromatic look with the lush coat and cool baseball cap which is such a fun accessory. Very chic.
You can’t do a beige story without mentioning Max Mara. He does neutrals so well and this collection didn’t disappoint.
This Giorgio Armani look is so cool I just had to include it. The touches of black give it an edge that I can appreciate.
Beige is a very warm neutral and when mixed with different textures makes you feel like you’re in a cocoon.
Tone on tone with lighter woods and concrete is a very modern way to do beige.
This is a perfect example of how beige doesn’t have to be boring. This room is very dynamic and keeps your eyes moving around with many different textures and hits of wood and stone.
You can’t do beige fashion trends without including a trench coat and it has to be double breasted. This will never go out of style as far as I’m concerned.
People are still wearing sneakers everywhere and with everything. These beige suede sneakers fit the bill.
Cargo pants are a micro-trend and in a beige color, it’s a two-fer. So cute.
A beige rug doesn’t sound sexy, but it gives a good neutral base to a room and will go with any color or style.
I love poufs and how you can move these around for different seating options. Under a console table, around the fireplace or as an ottoman for a chair, these come in so handy.
I used beige curtains in my living and dining room to match the color of my walls. It provides a neutral base for all of my artwork.
Under the Sea
I think we’ve all been inundated with images of the movie and the movie itself. Although it’s a pretty look, we’re ready to move on. Mermaidcore has evolved from all iridescence and now is also trending in a much softer way. For Fall it also encompasses crochet (like fishing net) and pearls with only a touch of shimmer.
This dress from Ulla Johnson would be too much if it was in the traditional iridescence fabric, but in this soft green it evokes the feeling of flowing seaweed.
This pearl bustier from Balmain gives us the pearls, but in a funkier way and the crochet purse reminds us of the fishing net. A totally new way to do “under the sea”.
This has all of the traditional mermaid colors, but is fun and flirty with the mini length and feather scarf.
I bet this bathroom tile makes you feel like you’re literally in the ocean while you’re taking a shower.
The colors, the light fixture. It’s full on mermaid, but I had to include it because it’s spectacular.
Here is a softer version of mermaidcore with a sea animal light fixture in pearl and blue shades.
Fashionistas are wearing sequins in the daytime but toning it down with something casual like jeans. If you’re not feeling it, it’s still a great look for night.
This shimmery pearl top is so beautiful and can be dressed up or down.
I want this pearl and shell ring right now. So cool.
Just one of these oyster pillows would make quite the impact in a Coastal style room. Such pretty colors.
A huge clam shell with a golden interior would find many uses in your home. It can hold matches, your keys, remotes, decorative balls, napkins, etc. The list is endless.
These blue pendants evoke the sea and look great over this kitchen island.
Mellow Yellow
Surprisingly yellow was on all the runways for Fall. There was marigold, mustard, butter, ochre, etc. It also surprisingly fit every model’s skin tone depending on what kind of yellow it was. I’ve always loved mustard but I was also feeling the other tones. Go figure.
Yellow to me is best in small doses for interior design. It’s such a strong color so I would spread the sunshine around in little hits or focal points. But as you see below, some people decided to go all out.
Ferragamo showed this delicious yellow shirred dress with a yellow purse and black tights. Far from looking like a bumblebee, it was hittin’. So good, and I love a good shir.
Burberry had two different kinds of mustard in their outerwear, bag, mittens and boots. Way to do tone on tone.
This simple butter colored shift was minimalism at its best. I had never heard of this London brand Tove before, but I like them. It’s headed by two ex-executives of Topshop.
This is a prime example of how black can really ground a color. Yellow might seem a little childish for adults, but the addition of black lends a sophistication to your decor as well as the darker, richer yellow color.
There’s something about the yellow that just brings out the molding on the walls. It’s an unusual treatment that really gives this foyer a wow factor. And again, that little bit of black on the bannister is the chef’s kiss.
The yellow chairs in this dining room are unexpected in a very good way.
Yes, this parka is so much fun!
I love to use bags as my pop of color and this yellow tote is great.
This muted yellow-gold shoe totally fits in with the leaves of Fall.
This shoe storage cabinet is everything and definitely gives you more storage than the Ikea one that’s so popular. Plus this comes in this yellow color that pops. Sunshine at the front door.
Pillows are such an easy way to get color into your décor and these mustard yellow pillows would be good on a sofa or a bed.
How cute is this yellow sofa bed? It would be so cute in a den/office/guest bedroom. Good for all the slashes.
When you see design trends sometimes they are so over the top that the average person can’t even relate to them. I hope I’ve given you some accessible looks for fashion and design for every trend so that you can make them your own.
Aga,jbin, if you haven’t seen Part 1 of the Fall Design Trends, please check it out and I think you’ll be all set for Fall.
See you next time.
