As Easter approaches, it’s the perfect time to refresh your home with a touch of springtime charm. This year, interior design enthusiasts are embracing the timeless elegance of pastel hues. Pastel pink, mint green, pale yellow, icy blue, peach, and lavender are making waves in the world of décor, infusing spaces with softness and serenity. But who says pastels are just for nurseries or children’s rooms? With a few strategic design choices, you can incorporate these delicate shades into your home while maintaining a sophisticated, adult-friendly aesthetic.
Pastel colors evoke a sense of tranquility and lightness, making them ideal for creating serene and inviting spaces. As the days grow longer and warmer, these soft hues bring a breath of fresh air indoors, effortlessly brightening up any room. Whether you’re aiming for a cozy living room, a serene bedroom retreat, or a welcoming dining area, pastels offer versatility and charm.
Elevating Pastels
While pastels are undeniably lovely on their own, adding darker accents can introduce depth and sophistication to your décor scheme. Incorporating black, brown, or deep charcoal gray can help balance the sweetness of pastels, creating a more mature and refined look.
- Black Accents: Introducing black accents, such as a sleek coffee table, picture frames, or lamp bases, can instantly elevate a pastel-dominated space. The contrast between the softness of pastels and the boldness of black adds drama and visual interest.
- Rich Woods: Incorporating rich, dark woods into your décor can also provide a sophisticated counterpoint to pastel tones. Think walnut or mahogany furniture pieces, or even just a few well-chosen accessories like wooden bowls or frames. The warmth and depth of these materials complement pastels beautifully, creating a harmonious balance.
- Metallic Finishes: Another way to add edge to pastel décor is through the use of metallic finishes, such as bronze, copper, or matte black. Whether it’s a statement chandelier, accent mirrors, or metallic-finished accessories, these elements can introduce a touch of glamour and modernity to your space.
Tips for Decorating with Pastels
- Layering Textures: To prevent pastel-heavy rooms from feeling one-dimensional, incorporate a variety of textures such as plush rugs, woven throws, velvet cushions, and glossy ceramics. This adds depth and visual interest to the space.
- Statement Pieces: Choose one or two larger furniture pieces in pastel tones to serve as focal points, then balance them with neutral or darker accents. This allows the pastels to shine without overwhelming the room.
- Artwork and Accessories: Introduce pops of pastel through artwork, decorative pillows, vases, and other accessories. These smaller touches can easily be switched out seasonally or as your tastes evolve.
- Natural Elements: Incorporate natural materials like rattan, wicker, or jute to add warmth and texture to pastel spaces. Plants also work wonders in softening the look and bringing a breath of fresh air into your home.
Pastels have been trending in Fashion since last Fall/Winter and if you’ve read my post on Easter Pastel Trends of the Spring /Summer 2024 Runway you’ll see that they are going to be hot for the warmer months too. So let’s look at each of these trending colors, an example of a room using the hue and some examples of Decor Items so you can go all in or just dip your toe in.
Peach Fuzz
As you have probably heard, Peach Fuzz is Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2024 and it’s a magical shade that goes with everything and makes everybody look good. Please check out my blog post, How to Incorporate Pantone’s COY 2024 – Peach Fuzz into Your Interiors and Fashion to see more on this buzzy color. By wrapping the color on the ceiling and advancing down the wall a little, it makes this bedroom seem extra cozy. Add a peach chest in the corner and it just completes the warmth of the space.

Lovely Lavender
Lavender is a little bit of a trickster in that it can appear gray at different times of the day, but that is the fun of it. It’s now being used in non-traditional ways like in this kitchen below.
Mellow Yellow
Pale or “Butter” Yellow was trending in Fashion on the Fall/Winter 2023 Runways and is now being carried over into Interiors. Yellow is a traditionally happy color and never really goes out of style. This bathroom is so fresh looking.
Pale Pink
Pink is officially a neutral it seems. Even men are getting into it and wearing it more and more. So naturally interiors are following suit and rooms decorated in this color are being seen all over the place. The Barbie movie just pushed it over the edge. Although I’m not a “pink” girl, I love this living room. It’s so chic.
Minty Green
Mint sounds so refreshing and this den is just color-drenched from the walls to the couch. It’s just a feel good color.

Icy Blue
This icy blue was on all of the runways for F/W23 too and color-drenching it in this bedroom makes for a very serene and tranquil space.
