DIY Word Art

DIY

I was working on a project for a friend of mine who needed their open concept kitchen, dining room and living room decorated. She had furniture but no art or decorative accessories. I will be posting the pictures of the finished project soon.

As always, I started with the art and I found two wooden frames with flower art that I picked up at a garage sale for $8 total. Good deal!

The flowers were so not the vibe of my friend. She’s from Brooklyn and so not the flowery type. The idea of this was some art that I saw on Etsy that was just words and I figured, I have Word on my computer so why not try to do something covering up the flowers?

I started by spraying the frames with shellac after spot staining them with my trusty stain pens.

I’m sorry, but if you don’t have these repair markers, what are you doing with your life? Haha. They are the best.

After staining and shellacking (is that a word?) I proceeded to think about what I wanted to say. Since she’s from Brooklyn, my first thought was Biggie of course so I picked out a font, spending way too much time on this by the way, and came up with “Spread Love, It’s the Brooklyn Way”.

The next picture was inspired directly by a picture on Etsy. It said, “Don’t Push Me, Cause I’m Close to the Edge” from Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five’s rap song “The Message”. I decided that I’d put the letters on the edge of the page. Get it?

Anywhoo, once I had both of them how I liked them in terms of font, I printed them out to see how it would look on the frame with the sizing of the font. After several trial and errors, I had the letters how I wanted them.

After being satisfied, I sent both of the files to my local copy center so they could print it out on glossy paper. Because the measurement of the inside frame was 7.875 x 11.75 ( weird sizing), I had them print it out at 11×14 so I’d have room to maneuver. In all actuality, I kinda loved the 11×14 size of them, but I didn’t have frames and there were budget concerns. Oh well, next time I know exactly what to do.

Now comes the tricky part. I measured the frames again and cut the pages out with my rotary cutter. I then went outside to use my spray adhesive to affix the art to the frames. It was very windy, so you could imagine how that went. Spray adhesive blown all into my face. Good times.

Then I let them dry and hung them up. Voila! Very simple word art for a Brooklyn girl.

These are so simple that I would definitely use this idea on more projects. You could use colored lettering, different fonts or different papers/colored paper. You could even modge podge them onto a board and frame them. The ideas are limitless.
