Every year when Black History Month rolls around, I find myself reflecting on legacy, creativity, innovation… and where I’m putting my dollars. Because celebration is cute. But circulation of money? That’s power.

For my final post of Black History Month, I’m spotlighting something near and dear to my design-loving, small-business-supporting heart: Black Etsy sellers. The makers. The artists. The creatives, building beautiful things from their homes, studios, kitchen tables, and late-night bursts of genius.

If we’re going to talk about supporting Black businesses, let’s actually support them. And yes, that includes adding to cart. Shopping on Etsy gives us access to independent designers, artists, and small brands doing the kind of thoughtful, soulful work you won’t find in a big box aisle under fluorescent lighting.

So let’s get into it and if you missed my previous posts, here they are:

Clothing: Style With Something to Say

You already know I love a good statement piece. And when that statement is rooted in culture, pride, softness, power, or humor? Even better.

Black-owned clothing brands on Etsy are giving:

  • Elevated graphic tees that actually feel designed
  • Cozy sweatshirts that say what we’re all thinking
  • Handmade garments with heritage-inspired prints
  • Size-inclusive, body-positive silhouettes

This isn’t fast fashion. This is intentional fashion.

When you purchase from a Black Etsy clothing designer, you’re often buying from someone who sketches, sources, prints, packages, and ships it themselves. That’s artistry and entrepreneurship in one transaction.

And I don’t know about you, but I’d rather wear something with a story than something that came off a warehouse conveyor belt.

Accessories: The Details Make the Outfit

If clothing is the main character, accessories are the plot twist.

Think:

  • Handmade statement earrings
  • Beaded bracelets with cultural symbolism
  • Custom headwraps and scarves
  • Structured handbags crafted in small batches

Accessories from Black Etsy sellers often blend tradition with modern edge. There’s history in the materials, pride in the craftsmanship and personality in every single detail.

As a designer, I will say this until I’m blue in the face: it’s the details that make a space—or an outfit—feel finished.

And when those details come from someone’s small business? Even better.

Art: Walls That Actually Mean Something

Let’s talk about art.

Black artists on Etsy are creating prints, paintings, digital downloads, and mixed media pieces that reflect joy, softness, power, rest, beauty, and complexity. The full spectrum.

If you’re decorating your home and there isn’t at least one piece that makes you pause and feel something, we need to talk.

Supporting Black artists means:

  • Seeing ourselves reflected on the walls
  • Investing in culture
  • Filling our homes with narratives that matter

As someone who stages and styles homes, I can tell you—art changes everything. It anchors a room. It tells a story before you ever open your mouth. So why not let that story be intentional?

The last two pictures are designs on fabric, which is an art all to itself.

Home: Design With Soul

You know this is my favorite category.

Black Etsy sellers are creating:

  • Hand-poured candles with layered scent stories
  • Throw pillows in bold prints and rich textures
  • Ceramics and mugs that feel like heirlooms
  • Wall hangings, baskets, and handcrafted decor

There is something deeply beautiful about bringing handmade items into your home. They carry energy. They carry history. And in a world that mass-produces everything, handmade feels rebellious—in the best way.

As a home stylist, I always tell my clients: mix high and low. Vintage and new. Big box and boutique. But please, for the love of good design, add in pieces that mean something.

Why This Matters

Supporting Black Etsy sellers isn’t just about one month. It’s about sustainability. Visibility. Growth.

When we:

  • Leave thoughtful reviews
  • Share shops on social media
  • Recommend sellers to friends
  • Become repeat customers

We help small businesses thrive beyond hashtags and themed campaigns. Buying from Black-owned shops builds generational wealth. It funds creativity. It tells the algorithm, “More of this, please.” And honestly? The quality, originality, and soul you’ll find is unmatched.

Let’s Be Intentional

For this final Black History Month post, I’m choosing action.

I’m choosing to:

  • Seek out Black makers
  • Invest in independent creatives
  • Fill my closet and my home with pieces that have heart

And I hope you will too, because supporting Black businesses shouldn’t feel like charity. It’s an upgrade. So as you scroll, shop, redecorate, refresh your wardrobe, or hunt for a gift—pause. Search intentionally. Choose intentionally. Your dollars speak. Let’s make them say something powerful.

See ya next time.
