BHM – 6 Black Fashion Designers You Should Know

Lifestyle

The global fashion industry has been significantly enriched by the creativity and innovation of Black designers. From redefining luxury to infusing cultural narratives into contemporary fashion, these designers offer unique perspectives that resonate worldwide.

In this post, we spotlight six remarkable Black fashion designers—LaQuan Smith, Sergio Hudson, Theophilio, Tolu Coker, Frederick Anderson, and Diotima—exploring their origins and the inspirations behind their Spring/Summer 2025 collections.

Sergio Hudson

Sergio Hudson is an American fashion designer who has made a significant impact in luxury women’s fashion. Known for his impeccable tailoring and vibrant color palettes, Hudson’s designs exude sophistication and power. His Spring/Summer 2025 collection draws inspiration from the movie “Valley of the Dolls” with his pastel hues, sleek retro silhouettes and the dynamic energy of the modern woman.

Hudson gained widespread recognition when former First Lady Michelle Obama wore his plum pantsuit at the 2021 presidential inauguration, which put a stamp on his status as a major designer.

Sergio used baby blues, yellows, pinks and lavenders but instead of looking childish, he gave his pieces a powerful and modern look like this baby blue jumpsuit.

Yellow is trending big time this Spring and Summer in all shades but butter yellow in particular has been all over the place. Here’s Sergio’s take on a t-shirt and satin skirt. It’s elegant, but also has an easiness to it.

This stunning dress looks like a piece of art!

He also showed Menswear and this lavender look is EVERYTHING!

LaQuan Smith

From Queens, New York, LaQuan Smith is known worldwide for his bold and glamorous designs that make a woman feel confident and sexy. He established his brand when he was just 21 and his clientele includes Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Kim Kardashian.

For the Spring/Summer 2025 collection, Smith wanted to show an animalistic glamour. Hiscollection was filled with browns, khakis and snakeskin prints. He also interspersed some textured jean material looks that were to die for. As Smith always says, his grandmother taught him pattern making and sewing so she definitely set him up for success.

I love this playful romper with the snakeskin print. It’s just so much fun.

There were several pieces with the snakeskin print including this sleek pants set.

Tolu Coker

Tolu Coker is a British-Nigerian multi-disciplinary designer whose work includes fashion, textiles and illustration. This approach allows her to create pieces that are not only visually striking but also rich in the storytelling of her heritage and history.

The Spring/Summer 2025 collection was her way of challenging the conventional norms and celebrating diversity. She has a commitment to social commentary and uses her designs to provoke thought in the fashion industry.

This baby blue leather blazer is impeccably tailored and it just sets off the crisp blue pants.

This gorgeous striped fabric was shown a few ways, but I loved this dress in particular because of the tie.

This look is subdued but the cut on the gray pinstriped top gives it an edge.

Tan leather? Yes please. This look is so chic because of the monotone don’t you think?

Diotima

Diotima was founded by Jamaican designer Rachel Scott, who brings a unique perspective to the fashion scene. Her designs merge traditional techniques with contemporary aesthetics.

Diotima’s Spring/Summer 2025 collection featured handcrafted elements that paid homage to Jamaican artisans but reimagined for the modern woman. Scott’s work reflects a deep respect for her heritage, and seamlessly integrates cultural motifs into high fashion looks.

Whites will be popular this Spring and Summer and she also had one of my favorite accessories – this lacy head scarf.

Brown was all over the runway and this embellished brown dress is definitely not your Grandma’s brown.

The fringe around this dress and the clutch is so unexpected.

These fringed pants are gorgeous and Diotima also designs these shoes.

Frederick Anderson

American designer Frederick Anderson was born in Memphis Tennessee and originally studied dance at the North Carolina School of the Arts and then fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC. He is renowned for his intricate designs that blend the modern with classic elegance.

His Spring/Summer 2025 collection showcases a range of pieces that highlight his expertise in texture and form, and was inspired by “African Glam”. Anderson’s journey in fashion is marked by his dedication to craftsmanship and a keen eye for detail – these are attributes that have earned him a loyal following.

You’d have to be blind to not know that all kinds of deep reds have been trending the past few seasons. This burgundy floral kaftan is elegance personified.

Another burgundy dress that’s been impeccably draped.

Black and white is always a good idea and this shirt dress over leggings is a little edgy but still very wearable.

His gown game is stellar like in this lacy, sequined black gown.

Theophilio

Theophilio, founded by Jamaican-born designer Edvin Thompson, is a contemporary brand that seamlessly blends cultural heritage with modern aesthetics. Specializing in ready-to-wear fashion, Theophilio’s designs are a vibrant celebration of Black culture, often incorporating elements that reflect Thompson’s Caribbean roots.

The Spring/Summer 2025 collection looked like you were going to the club personal. Thompson’s work has been recognized for its unique fusion of nostalgia and contemporary style, making Theophilio a standout in the fashion industry.

Doesn’t this remind you of the old pictures of Studio 54?

Another dress that seems so simple but it’s made with leather and tulle which takes it to a whole other level.

With its graffiti like print, this dress looks like you just stepped out of a club in the Bronx.

And for the finale, I had to show you this animal print Menswear look. Only a man with hella confidence would wear this and I’m here for it.

These six designers exemplify the diverse talent and visionary creativity that Black fashion designers bring to the global stage. Through their innovative designs and personal narratives, they continue to shape the fashion landscape, offering fresh perspectives that challenge and inspire.

See ya next time.
