Ain’t Too Proud to Dumpster Dive: The One with the Bench and the Dog Walk Rescue

DIY, Home Styling, Interior Design, Lifestyle

Some people walk their dog and come home with sticks. I walk mine and come home with furniture.

Welcome to another riveting installment of “Ain’t Too Proud to Dumpster Dive”—a series where I risk tetanus and mild judgment from neighbors in the name of fabulous design.

Let me set the scene: I was out walking my dog, minding my business, when out of the corner of my eye I spotted her. A long, lonely, tufted bench just sitting on the side of the road. Abandoned. Beige. Slightly dusty. But solid. You know how some people see trash? I see potential with a side of upholstery staples.

The Struggle Was Real

Now, I’m no quitter. So naturally, I start dragging this thing to my car like I’m auditioning for an HGTV survival show. That’s when the owner walks out, sees me sweating and wrestling his old bench like it owed me money, and kindly offers to help me load it into my car. A true gentleman. I assume he knew she was going to a good home.

Here’s the “Before” moment:

A little sad. A little dirty. But those bones? Gorgeous.

Fabric Store Therapy

Cue the next scene: me standing in a fabric store like a kid in a candy shop, petting every bolt of upholstery like it’s a rescue puppy. There’s nothing like going in and getting little samples of fabric to take home with me but I finally landed on a graphic navy-and-white print that felt modern, textural, and just the right amount of sassy. I got about 6 yards, had it rolled up and left with a pep in my step ready to get down to business..

It sat on my deck and got decimated by all of the storms we’ve been having in Atlanta lately. Branches, leaves and soggy fabric. But surprisingly when I took the fabric off, it was dry underneath. Hmmm.

I laid the fabric out on the floor and cut a top piece, 2 side pieces and 2 end pieces. I had plenty of fabric left, so I see pillows in my future. If you look closely in the back, I put some more batting over the whole bench to make it extra comfy.

Here’s the fabric wrong side out. I pinned it beforehand, took it to my sewing machine and made it work. After a couple of re-dos, it all worked out. I then trimmed the extra fabric.

Here it is right side out, but not stapled yet.

When I flipped it over I was surprised to see a Mitchell Gold label. It just keeps getting and better doesn’t it?

I am really into upholstery where the legs are upholstered also. I’ve seen this all around the internet and Anthropologie does it fabulously also. So, I wrapped these bad boys and proceeded to fall in love.

The After

And now? She’s not just a bench. She’s a moment.

She’s living her best life under a modern wall sculpture, lounging on a jute rug, and serving up designer vibes like she never spent a single second on the curb.

So the moral of the story is: never underestimate the power of a good walk, a helpful stranger, and an eye for potential. Oh—and always keep your trunk empty. You never know when the universe is going to hand you a fabulous bench for free.

Stay tuned for the next roadside rescue. You never know what I’ll drag home next.

See ya next time.
