DIY is my jam, but it does take some time. The process can sometimes be tedious, but there’s nothing like seeing what’s in my head, actually come to fruition. This is part of a series called “Ain’t Too Proud to Dumpster Dive”. Since we don’t have a lot of dumpsters in Atlanta, most of my stuff is coming from the side of the road, but that doesn’t flow off the tongue like my title. Haha
If you missed any of my previous dumpster diving projects, here’s the list from the pictures at the very beginning to the four projects I’ve done so far.
I only have one left to do in this group; an old scratched up armchair which I hope I can finish by the end of the summer. I already have some more items lined up that I can start on after this.
I found this particular chair on a walk one day with my dog and I immediately went back home and got my car to go back and pick it up. It was sturdy and the only thing wrong with it was the scuffed up finish. These chairs were very popular in the 60’s and were generally made of fiberglass. I knew I could turn it into something great.
The silver legs were in good shape, so I just cleaned them up and wiped down the rest of the chair. For a long time I thought I would put some padding over it and attach fabric or I could quilt some fabric and attach it. In the end, I decided to try modge podge, which is one of my fabric things to do. It only requires paper, magazine pages or book pages and you use the modge podge to “glue” it to the surface. Add another coat of modge podge on top, and you’re done.
I pulled some magazines out from my ridiculous stash and was on my way. I decided to pull out as many pages in coastal colors like green, blue, gray and beige with splashes of mustard and rust. I usually tear the pieces when I modge podge, but this time I decided I wanted to do squares and rectangles in different sizes so I needed to cut them out.
I started off with the mustard piece on the top middle portion and then just worked out from there, stacking the pieces as I went.. You can use an old chip brush like I did. That way, you can just throw it away when you’re finished. This goes surprisingly fast and I did it in one afternoon while watching TV.
After two coats of spray poly, here is the finished product. I’m so proud of how this came out.
I took a bunch of different pictures in different lighting so you could see all angles. This one was so satisfying and I hope you can get some modge podge ideas from this.I literally will modge anything. Old baking trays, bookcases, plates and of course chairs. So go forth and modge podge…..!
Have you ever modge podged anything? Let me know in the comments and I will see ya next time.
