Halloween nails are basically wearable mini art projects, with enough options for everyone from “I acknowledge Halloween” to “I AM HALLOWEEN.”

If you think Halloween decorating is the only place you get to unleash your inner creative director, think again. Halloween nails have entered the chat. And honestly, I think we should all partake.

There is something ridiculously fun about decorating your nails for the season. It’s temporary, it’s playful, and unlike painting your entire house orange and covering every available surface with skeletons, you can remove it when November rolls around. No storage bin required. Well… except for the nail polish collection you swear you are no longer going to add to.

And before you tell me, “Karen, I can’t do nail art,” let me stop you right there. You absolutely can. Halloween is practically made for DIY nail art because perfection is not the point. A little wonkiness can actually make a spiderweb look creepier. A slightly crooked ghost? Adorable. A drip that doesn’t quite drip? Call it artistic interpretation.

And if DIY isn’t your thing, the press-on nail game has been seriously elevated. We are no longer talking about those obviously fake nails that look like they were purchased at the drugstore five minutes before a party. There are now press-ons in every imaginable shape, length, finish and design—and some are legitimately tiny works of art. So whether you want short and subtle or long enough to accidentally scratch your own eyeball, there is a Halloween nail waiting for you.

Here are the four Halloween nail trends giving me life right now.

Minimal Halloween Nails — For the Quiet Girlies

Not everyone wants their fingertips to announce, “I HAVE ARRIVED FROM THE UNDERWORLD!” And that’s perfectly okay.

Minimal Halloween nails are for those of us who want to participate without completely committing to the haunted house aesthetic. Think tiny ghosts, delicate little bats, a single spiderweb, miniature pumpkins, subtle black French tips or a strategically placed little skull. You can even keep the base neutral—think nude, sheer pink, cream or soft beige—and add just one spooky detail.

I especially love this approach because it proves that Halloween nails don’t have to be loud to be festive. A tiny black spider crawling across an otherwise neutral manicure? Chic. Little white ghosties on a sheer base? Cute. A black French tip with the tiniest orange accent? I’m listening.

This is Halloween for the person who wants to whisper “boo” instead of screaming it.

Black on Black — For the Goth Obsessed

Now we are moving into my favorite neighborhood: Gothville.

Black-on-black nails are proof that monochromatic does not mean boring. In fact, when you start playing with finishes, black becomes surprisingly sophisticated. Matte black with glossy black designs. Shiny black with chrome accents. Black lace. Black flames. Black spiderwebs. Black French tips. Black with tiny black rhinestones.

Basically, take everything you thought you knew about Halloween nails and remove the orange. The beauty of black-on-black is that the design reveals itself when the light hits it. At first glance, it looks like a gorgeous, moody black manicure. Then you move your hand and suddenly—surprise!—there’s a glossy spiderweb hiding on that matte nail.

It’s giving gothic mansion, midnight cocktail, velvet curtains and absolutely no interest in pumpkin spice. And I am here for every bit of it.

Zombie Nails — For the Zombie Apocalypse Fans

Some people like cute Halloween. Some like spooky Halloween. And then there are the people who look at Halloween and think, “How disgusting can we make this?” Enter zombie nails.

If you have an affinity for zombie movies, horror films or the iconic Thriller video, this is your moment. Think decaying flesh, exposed bones, stitches, scratches, blood drips, cracked skin and that wonderfully creepy combination of green, gray, brown, black and red.

And let’s not forget the inspiration sitting right in front of us: the undead dancers from Thriller. Because if you’re going to embrace zombie nails, you might as well give a little nod to one of the most iconic Halloween-adjacent music videos ever made.

The great thing about this trend is that you don’t need every nail to tell the same story. One nail can look like a zombie bite, another can have stitches, another can feature a skeletal hand. You can go full horror movie poster—or keep it slightly more wearable with just a few strategically creepy details.

And if somebody looks at your hands and says, “Ewwww,” congratulations. You nailed it.

Mix & Match — For the Extra Among Us

If the thought of choosing one Halloween design makes you break out in a creative sweat, why choose? Mix. Match. Go completely over the top. There are no rules here.

This is where you can put a ghost on one nail, a spiderweb on another, a pumpkin on the next, some black-and-white stripes on another and perhaps a little skeleton for good measure. Add chrome. Add glitter. Add rhinestones. Add a tiny eyeball. Add whatever your Halloween-loving heart desires.

The beauty of the mix-and-match manicure is that every nail gets to have its own personality. And frankly, that feels very on brand for Halloween. Why should all ten nails behave themselves?

You can also mix finishes and textures—matte with glossy, metallic with flat, translucent with opaque. Throw in a little orange, acid green, purple, blood red or classic black. This is not the manicure for someone who wants to blend in. This is the manicure for someone who has decided that subtlety is for November.

So, Are You Participating?

My answer is an enthusiastic YES.

Halloween is one of those times of year when we are given permission to be a little ridiculous, a little dramatic and a whole lot creative. We decorate our homes, dress up, eat excessive amounts of candy and watch movies about people who absolutely should not be investigating that noise coming from the basement.

Why shouldn’t our nails get in on the fun? Whether you’re a minimalist ghost girl, a black-on-black Goth, a Thriller-loving zombie enthusiast or a more-is-more mix-and-match maximalist, there is a Halloween manicure with your name on it.

And if you’re still undecided? Just remember: it’s only Halloween. You can always take the nails off. But let’s be honest. You probably won’t want to.

See ya next time.
