I remember as a child going to see the July 4th fireworks with our blankets and eating hot dogs and salt water taffy. I’m from New England, Connecticut to be exact, and I always associate salt water taffy with July 4th. I don’t think I’ve ever missed a fireworks celebration. There’s something about the colors and lights that’s just mesmerizing.
There’s always something to do in Atlanta on July 4th and I’ve compiled a list of a few things in the metropolitan area. If you don’t feel like barbecuing and want to get out of your backyard, here’s what you can do.
Centennial Park
This is a favorite of kids because of the splash pads. They shoot water up in the air and the kids love running around in it. I know my kid did.
Centennial Park is a 22-acre greenspace that was built for the 1996 Summer Olympics. It was the catalyst for revitalizing downtown Atlanta and is now the anchor for a thriving hospitality and entertainment area.
Look Up Atlanta is the official name of the fireworks show on July 4th and it is the largest metropolitan fireworks show in the U.S. The official times are 5:00pm – 9:30pm with the fireworks show starting at 9:00pm. There will be food trucks and exhibits as well as the splash pads for kids. The Skyview Ferris Wheel will be open from 12pm – 12am. There are 42 climate controlled gondolas and each ride takes an hour to go around. I think people will be fighting over the hour of the fireworks. I know I would.

Pied Piper Parade and Fireworks
I love downtown Decatur. It is so quaint, there’s a big sense of community and they’re always doing something for the holidays.
In 2022 the square was nominated for the best public square in the country by USA Today. It spans 15 blocks and has 85 local shops and restaurants.
This year’s July 4th parade starts at 6pm, the live music is from 7-9pm and the fireworks will start at 9pm. Anyone can participate in the parade or you can just watch. You can walk, ride your bike, skate or pull your kids in a wagon, etc. Some people even build their own floats. The parade line-up begins at the First Baptist Church of Decatur at 5:30pm.
Six Flags Over Georgia
When my son was growing up, we would go to Six Flags all of the time and just ride the rollercoasters and eat funnel cake. That’s some of the best memories I have of this park. In the category of thrill rides, they have a whopping 14! I know I’m supposed to be talking about July 4th, but this experience gives you so much more than fireworks.
They have a great fireworks display starting at 9:15pm on July 3-6 and the park is open from 11am – 10pm. You can see the fireworks from just about any place in the park, but head to Metropolis for the best view.
For those of you not from Atlanta, there’s a section of the park that’s based on Superman. There’s a Superman Roller Coaster where you ride face down and head first! Also a Justice League ride where they give you stun guns and you’ll battle life size animatronics of the Joker and Lex Luthor. There are also rides based on Batman, located in Gotham City. The Riddler, the DC Super Villains Swing,
I’ve focused so much on roller coasters because that’s my favorite, but there are so many rides and attractions for adults and children alike, that I can’t say enough about this park.

Six Flags Water Park
If you need to be in the water for July 4th, please don’t forget that Six Flags also has a water park. The celebration will be from 7-10pm with the purchase of VIP tickets. As the normal hours of the water park are 11am – 8pm, this gives you access to the park after it closes. The tickets include an all you can eat buffet, games & music and of course premium viewing of the fireworks at 9:15pm.
There’s a 38,000 square foot wave pool, a tsunami surge slide and a multitude of fun family attractions.
Atlanta Braves
For every Friday night home game, the Braves have fireworks and since this year July 4th is on a Friday, it will be particularly great. The Braves have one of the best fireworks shows in the Southeast and if you can catch this game, you’ll be in for a treat.
This is really a twofer because The Battery outside of the stadium is filled with shops, restaurants and bars. You could literally spend the whole day here and finish off with the game.

Seeing a fireworks show is definitely a favorite pastime of mine so if you have any other favorite locations, please let me know in the comments. Personally, I like to stay in the state of Georgia for the holiday because I’m lazy like that, but any recommendations in the Southeast would be greatly appreciated. Who knows, I might decide to take a road trip.
