I’m so excited to tell you about the Interior Design Trends for 2024 since so much of what I love is trending. Now, I’m not one to follow the trends too closely because I believe that you love what you love and who cares if it’s not trending. But this time, there’s so much goodness and I’m sure you’ll agree.
So sit back, grab a cup of coffee and enjoy.
Earthy Neutral Tones
This is my #1 Trend because it encompasses all that I love. Warm and earthy tones that have a masculine edge to them.
The term “quiet luxury” started off pertaining to fashion and meant no labels and a neutral way of dressing that embodied old money. Now it’s being applied to interiors and it’s a warmth by using an earthy color palette but in unique ways with different textures, natural stone surfaces and warm wood tones. Quiet luxury doesn’t mean it has to cost a lot, but it’s about an appreciation for living well.
Neutrals
This neutral living room is totally my jam. There’s enough visual interest, different shapes and textures to make me happy.
This bedroom is everything. As you can tell by now if you’ve been following my blog, I love beams on the ceiling. This color palette is so soothing that I don’t think I would ever leave.
For a cottage or farmhouse look, the wainscoting and bedding makes for a very comfy and cozy bedroom.
Beige is Back
Beige is Back in a big way and this bedroom shows that it is not boring as long as you layer the room with different textures and tones of neutrals.
Beige can be a subtle backdrop for shades of tans and creams like in this living room. Just count how many textures there are in this room. Keeps it from being one note.
Brown is the New White
I did a whole blog post on brown being the “it” color in 2023 and going into 2024. The dark chocolate walls in this bedroom creates a cozy hug around you and it’s offset by the cream bed.
I don’t think there’s too many things better than brown velvet, do you? This room is like a Renaissance painting.
Handmade and Natural Materials
The next trend is made up of our collective appreciation for handmade, artisanal and natural materials. We as a country have been trending this way for a while now and I hope we continue to honor makers and artisans.
Zellige Tiles
These tiles have been all over the place and I’m sure you’ve seen them on design shows. They’re clay tiles made by hand in Morocco and have been around forever. People are embracing the imperfections because that shows that they are handmade.
This bathroom has the 4” square tiles in a sort of oyster pearlized color. I think it’s absolutely stunning.
This kitchen has a vertical stack application of the zellige tiles and you can really see the color variations which gives it a lot of movement. And it’s in my favorite color green.
Wood Details
Slatted wood is still in, which some of you might be rolling your eyes at, but you can apply it any way that you like, vertically, horizontally on the ceiling, in a nook, stained or painted, etc. The options are absolutely endless.
Burl Wood is back in a big way also. Art deco is still a thing and it uses a lot of burled wood in the style but I think it works equally well in other styles too like the living room below.
Rattan and Cane
Since we are returning to a time of appreciating craftsmanship, it’s only natural that rattan and cane are making a comeback. It used to only be for outdoor furniture, but it’s being used more and more inside.
This chair paired with wood and leather is fabulous. I think it would work with any style.
Why not use it as a partition in the bathroom? It totally works and gives it a global look.
Larger than Life Marble & Stone
Marble never really went away, but people have been using quartz and others more and more because of the maintenance issues with marble. Very veiny marble and stone in all its applications are back in a big way.
This trend might be a little polarizing, but I’m here for it. I usually don’t like such pronounced veining but something about these slabs are speaking to me. This bathroom makes my heart swoon.
This kitchen is banging, if you know what I mean. The marble is singing and I love how it goes up behind the stove. If you don’t buy into having everything in this marble, you could just put it behind the stove and use a light solid stone everywhere else.
I’ve also been seeing stone walls and stone fireplaces that go all the way up to the ceiling. I love this because the grout lines are not pronounced and the stone bench is very cool.
Curves
Soft Lines and Organic Shapes are the buzzwords for 2024 and beyond. Those rounded boucle chairs were everywhere and frankly I started to get sick of them. The jury is still out for me on the curvy sofas also. While I can appreciate them in pictures, I’m not sure how comfy they would be in reality. But I love curvy accessories and small furniture items.
Furniture
Like I said, the curvy sofas I’m not so sure about but this one looks beautiful. I’m really digging the nested curvy coffee tables.
I think this Anthropologie chair is so cute isn’t it? The ochre velvet seat cushion just sets it off.
Arches
Arches are back again too but if you know Allison from Windy City Rehab, they are never out of style. Check out this living room with the rounded chairs and coffee table. It’s two trends in one.
Bathrooms are getting in on the arch action too. I’ve been seeing barrel ceilings and arches into the shower. This bathroom set the vanity mirror inside of an arch. Beautiful.
Curves in the Kitchen
Kitchens are usually filled with straight lines and right angles but more and more designers are using curves and rounded edges. To me it makes the pieces in the kitchen feel like furniture instead of just utilitarian. This kitchen below with the rounded cabinet and kitchen island is so unique.
Using cement as the material makes this rounded, reeded island so special. I love this.
Wood plus a rounded kitchen island? Yes please. Totally mid-century but could work in many different styles.
Wallcoverings
Wallpaper is still hot and I hope it never goes out of style. But like I said at the beginning, if you love it, it doesn’t matter if it’s not “in style”.
Nothing has really changed in terms of pattern. It’s still anything goes, but tribal motifs like in this bathroom are near to my heart. Especially in these muted tones, it’s funky and I love it.
Murals are still in and I love this sort of dreamy one in the living room. You can find almost any scene you would want and there are even companies that will take your photograph and turn it into a wallpaper mural.
Wallpaper that looks like wood is back and this wallpaper below has so many tones of brown that it looks like it’s in motion.
Wallpaper on the ceiling is beautiful if you don’t have a texture like I do. Ugh. Placing it on a barrel ceiling like below makes it even more special.
I had to break up this blog post into two parts because there’s just so many things that caught my eyes. I wanted to first concentrate on the overall trend of soothing, warm, organic, artisanal which is in keeping with people wanting to destress and make their home a place of solace. Away from the craziness of the world.
Stay tuned for Part 2 where we really ramp it up and show you the more “in your face” trends.
Let me know in the comments what you think about the trends so far.
See ya next time.
