15 of the Coolest Places to Go on a Date

Lifestyle

https://puffpassandpaint.com/blog/painting-date-night/

Ah, Date Night. It’s simultaneously scary and exciting. If you’re like me, it’s exhausting thinking about dating and getting through that initial phase of getting to know someone, but when you do then there’s the problem of what should you do on a date?

I recommend keeping it fun and light even if you’ve known your special someone for years. Dinner and a movie is not the move anymore. Get creative and find adventures or new ideas to experience together based on your interests or just doing something totally new.

I’ve compiled a list of date night ideas that I’ve either tried or things that intrigued me and I would love to experience.

Georgia Aquarium

If you’ve never been to this aquarium you have been missing out. Even if you’re from outside the state of Georgia, I would urge you to make a trip to see this fantastic place. Besides being a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of aquatic life, it houses over 100,000 animals from 500 species and is the largest aquarium in the U.S.

This is truly an experience and believe it or not, a sexy date night. As you walk through the tunnel called the Ocean Voyager, it makes for a surprisingly intimate date even with people all around you. Check out the event calendar to see all of the other options for adults only.

City Winery

This is one of my favorite venues in Atlanta. Located on the same lot as Ponce City Market, City Winery is a combination of the culinary and music. With intimate concert sets paired with wine and food, it’s the perfect date night. It’s Atlanta’s first fully operational winery.

There’s a separate restaurant called the Barrel Room if you don’t want to see a show, but I would recommend watching a world class musician while enjoying a great meal. The food is wonderful, which is rare in these sorts of venues.

On a side note, they also have wine tastings and a make your own wine class where you can choose a wine and make your own labels. So much fun.

High Museum of Art

If you and your date are into art, this museum has everything you need to make a great date night. The museum is home to over 17,000 works of American, European, African, Photograph, Contemporary and Folk Art. It’s also one of the nation’s leading art museums.

Besides touring the galleries, on the first, second and third Fridays of the month the museum stays open late for social events. The first Friday is High Frequency Friday where you take a guided tour in the galleries, dance and enjoy drinks. The second Friday of the month is called Oasis and it consists of yoga exercises, art making and reflecting with art. The third Friday of the month is Jazz Night and this is my personal favorite. You sip drinks and listen to some of the most accomplished local musicians. This event has seating on a first come first come basis so it’s best to get there by 6pm.

The Splatter Studio

This paint studio is not your typical BYOB, everybody paints a landscape joint. This is an epic abstract art adventure where everybody’s art is different. You can paint, splatter, splash, drip or pour paint onto a canvas. It’s very interactive with your date so you can even splash paint on each other’s canvases. You can use your hands, a brush or even a paint gun.

They will provide a box to take home your painting as well as gloves, shoe covers and ponchos. Glasses available by request. There’s no alcohol involved, but there are plenty of bars and restaurants in the neighborhood of Virginia-Highlands.

Westside Trail Bike Tour

Bike riding brings back so much nostalgia for me. Back in the day, we would ride our bikes all day long and our parents would have to beg us to come in and eat. So, taking a bike tour on the Westside Beltline would be right up my alley. The historical neighborhood of West End is where the tour will start.

Every Saturday morning from March to November, three tour guides will take you through the city and tell you about the history of various neighborhoods on the Westside. You can either rent a bike or bring your own and after the tour, there are restaurants and bars to enjoy.

The Painted Pin

Part bowling alley, part recreation and arcade spot, the Painted Pin is such a fun place. Bowling is actually an afterthought to me as there’s so much to do. We usually end up bowling last if at all. If you’re a lover of games, this place is for you. It has ping pong, skee-ball, electronic pop-up basketball, bocce courts, etc.

The food is “upscale alley” and they have a very sophisticated drink program that consists of craft and local beers, wine and signature cocktails. You can also get small plates that you can share.

Skyline Park at Ponce City Market

Ponce City Market is one of my favorite places to go since it has two things that I love; Anthropologie and a Food Hall. But if you’ve never been to the rooftop, which is called Skyline Park, it’s worth a trip and a good place to take a date.

Besides having one of the best views of downtown Atlanta, there’s vintage games, a mini-golf course, a 3-story slide, a tower ride, a restaurant and a cocktail bar. You wouldn’t think they could fit all of that onto a roof, but they do. You have to buy a ticket to get on the roof, but it’s only $15/person and it’s totally worth it.

Prestige Helicopters

If you’ve never been on a helicopter, you’re in for a treat. This is one of the ultimate date nights if you and your partner are the adventurous type. You’ll be able to see all of Atlanta’s beautiful architecture and buildings, or you can head out to the Chattahoochee or Stone Mountain area among others. There are several tours available with different price points.

Take to the skies with that special someone and I can guarantee that you won’t regret it.

Tiny Doors Atlanta

Tiny Doors is an art-based project with 7” door sculptures scattered around Atlanta neighborhoods and fit the architecture of the surrounding areas. The doors are created by artist Karen Anderson Singer and are placed on a wall or column to represent an entrance to another world.

This is such a fun activity, kind of like a scavenger hunt. The doors are numbered (over 30), you can get the list of doors online and you try to locate all of the doors. When you find one, you take a picture and post it online or just look for fun. This is a lighthearted date that doesn’t take itself too seriously, if you know what I mean.

Starlight Drive-in Theater

When I was growing up in Connecticut, we would take my parents’ station wagon and go to the drive-in. The back seat would fold down and we would set up our sleeping bags, pillows and blankets.

This particular drive-in theater is an institution in Atlanta and most of the time it offers a double feature unless the studio contract forbids it. The technology has been updated and you have to have an FM radio to play the movie so make sure your battery is strong enough to make it through the viewing and they recommend that you start up your car during intermission.

The concession has been closed since the pandemic, but we always pick up our favorite foods and drinks to bring with us. It’s something fun to do for a change.

The Battery Atlanta

If you’ve been to an Atlanta Braves game then you know that the Battery is an entertainment center outside of the ballpark. Filled with restaurants, retail shops, bars and The Roxy music venue, it’s a destination spot all on its own.

Take a date to the Battery, walk around and even watch the game in one of the bars or restaurants.

Castleberry Hill Art Stroll

Every second Friday from 6-10pm you can participate in the Castleberry Hill Art Stroll. It’s a self-guided tour and it’s free. This community has been named one of the Top Ten Art Districts in the country. Stroll through this historic community and visit galleries, shops and restaurants. I love to do things like this and would consider this a very good date.

Picnic in a Park or at Home

For a more one-on-one date, pack up a meal with a blanket and head to one of the parks. It would be a nice, relaxing date.

If weather doesn’t permit or you just feel like staying in, set up a picnic in your house. It’s a cute idea and will be sure to impress.

Take a Hike

If you love the outdoors, you could always take a backpack, fill it with water and trail mix and head for the mountains. North Georgia has some beautiful trails and if your date loves the outdoors like you do, this would be a great date.

Visit a Brewery

I’m so into craft and local beer and Atlanta has exploded with breweries in the last 10 years or so. Google breweries in Atlanta and you’d be surprised how many there are. I’ve listed just a few, but if you and your date like beer, this would be a fun date night.

Check out everyone’s calendars for special events like tastings and pairings. You’d be surprised how many fun activities you can do centered around beer.

I hope I’ve provided you with enough options and maybe even sparked some ideas of your own. The thing is to get creative and even if it sounds odd or weird or silly, try it. If you like it, then I love it. I believe everyone should do what makes them happy and if your date enjoys it, then it’s a win win. I think most people would appreciate a date that’s out of the box. Just trust your gut and go for it.

Let me know in the comments what was the most unique date you’ve ever been on.
